-- The Next Generation Education Project --

A Unique Learning and Doing Opportunity For Young People

The author's motivation for writing the book and the goal of the two days of activities was to record and preserve the history so that young people will better know and understand the history of their own community. (All of the author's proceeds are being donated to this project.)

The Next Generation Education Project was directed to sharing the Anniston story with black and white young people in the community so that they can understand their shared history and encourage them to continue the struggle for equality. This Next Generation Education Project included:

  • preserving the Oral History Archives and making them fully available online,
  • production and distribution of a video of the Symposium and the other project events,
  • a special state of the art interactive website that will serve as a permanent archive of the project,
  • wide distribution of the book Beyond the Burning Bus to young people
  • distributing other related educational materials about civil rights and promoting and teaching tolerance among young people.

All the materials will be made available free to students, schools and public libraries in Calhoun County and throughout Alabama.

Teaching Tolerance Contest

One part of the education project was a Teaching Tolerance Contest. As part of the Sept. 13 -14 events, all sixth grade students in the Anniston schools are invited to participate in the context by answering the question "What does tolerance mean to me ?" They could answer the question any way they wanted - they could:

  • Draw a picture
  • Write a poem
  • Write a story / essay
  • Make something
  • Or a combination of the above
  • Any and all ways of participating and sharing ideas and feelings are welcome

All students who participate were recognized with a certificate. Award winners were recognized at the Celebration Banquet on Saturday Sept. 13th.

All student's poem, stories, artwork, etc. were exhibited at the various Beyond the Burning Bus events including the symposium, church services, Banquet, etc.
